Just wondering if anyone knows why Tewksbury has kindergarten 2 fulls days and 1 1/2 day instead of 5 1/2 days?
seems like a long day for 5 year olds even if it is only twice a week.

I believe the town is saving money on buses by not sending all the kids for 5 half days. There was a lot of discussion about this last year on the board. You may want to check on some posts from last year.

IMHO full days are better for kindgarten but I think it all depends on the child. My son turned 6 one month after kindergarten started so he's on the older end of the class and he was ready for a longer day. But all kids are definitely different!

I think that Kindergarten should be for 5 full days. They need to be prepared for 1st grade. I think it is so stupid if you want your child to go a few extra days you have to pay for it! I can see 5 1/2 days to prepare them for a full week. I also think they need to do something about the Trahan School. We pay enough tax money & they should be more concered about the school system rather than changing the town over to sewer.

My son did the 5 half days and he did fine going into first grade. My other child is in the kindergarten now and they get less class time now than when they did the five half days. They now have gym, lunch, library skills and other things that give them less in class time. Five full days doesn't mean you get more schooling. After lunch the kids are so tired that they lay down in my child's class to rest. Their brains are tired by noon and the teachers don't push them as they know they've got all they can out of them. Had the Trahan not gotten their sewer upgraded who knows what would have happened with all of those kids in the school so I'm very thankful for sewer at the school.

It just doesn't make sense to me to have your child stay home 2 days. I know a lot of other towns that send the kids 5 1/2 days. Thats a lot better than what Tewksbury has to offer. I really think they need to remodel the schools. When I drive by the Trahan School I think it looks so nasty & the town should be putting there MONEY into the schools. It's not only the Trahan but the High School is absolutly disgusting looking.

Hold that thought. There will soon be some kind of debt exemption to remodel the schools. When it happens, remember then to vote yes.

Right now there is no room in the Trahan kindergarten for full days. At present in one classroom there are about 65 kids with two kindergarten and an extended day class sharing the ONE classroom. Extended day has a small space behind the filing cabinets.

I love when people say that they should be going 5 full days to get ready for 1st grade, then how many years do we think it will take until people are saying we should be sending them to full day pre-school to get ready for Kindergarten?? When does it stop?

At 6 years old, I can't imagine my child not going to school everyday, whether 1/2 or full day, so I am grateful for the extended day program even if it costs an arm and a leg. Though I have to say, one annoying thing about this 2 1/2 day program is that kids miss out on school events if the event falls on a day the child doesn't have K

Clifford, the first year kids go to school for a full day they are tired and can't make it through the day - it doesn't matter what grade. If they don't work through that in kindergarten then they are sleeping through first grade. If one year has to be compromised for transition, I'd say let it be kindergarten.

Uhm... my kids did 2 1/2 day kindi, and neither of them "slept through first grade". In fact both did quite well. Different strokes for different folks. Not worth an arm or a leg. Both groups do just as well as the other.

I think their stamina comes w/ age...I seriously doubt kids that don't go 5 full days in K are falling asleep in 1st grade, what I think is more important is getting them in the schedule of being there 5 days in a row, not the hours....that's why I'm all for the 5 half days....

I agree 100% w/12345 that Kindergarten should be going 5 days a week to get them into a schedule routine.

The Town should be do something about the 2 1/2 day schedule. I think it so silly.
