Math and English; we did bad

Postby bkhote on Thu Oct 15, 2009 12:15 pm

Trahan school did pretty BAD in the last MCAS.
From 9 last year ( which itself is pity), English Advanced students droop to 1 ???
And for Math it drooped from 29 last years to just 7 students at the advance level???

Could someone explain this droop.

Maybe it's because the parents can't spell. "droop"

happyone, let me guess, you might be associated with the school(s)... may be not
Please don't pass the blame. This is too drastic.
You spent your energy on highlighting my typing mistake instead of thinking/questioning
what must have happened that got us these results.
I made a typing mistake. How come all the parents made mistakes compared to the last few years.
BTW, failing students in 2009 is more than addition of the previous THREE years... this is too
alarming ( now don't check on my math).

GRADE 04 - ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
PERFORMANCE LEVEL 2006 2007 2008 2009
ADVANCED__________10 13 9 1
PROFICIENT_________ 41 46 53 34
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT_42 37 34 47
FAILING_____________8 3 5 18

BTW I am not paid for these postings ...unlike people responsible for keeping
education standards up.

BK,

The answer to your question is probably a combination of things:

#1 - Changes in the staff / program at the school. Have class sizes changed (increased?) Has the change in administration (Mr. Paul leaving) had a negative impact? Is it a result of the new admin getting up to speed? Has their been a shakeup in teachers at the 3rd/4th grade levels? Has their been an unusually high number of special needs children? As much as we try to educate and assist them with the MCAS, standardized tests are often extremely difficult challenges for many children with learning disabilities. All of these point to a temporary situation which is unfortunate for kids in 3rd and 4th grade but that does not mean the situation should be ignored. Steps should be taken to get back on track.

#2 - Parental involvement. Are parents keeping up with everything their kids need at home to support their education? The schools cannot do it all (even though you and I reminisce about a much different sort of education system) with the funding issues they have these days. Parental involvement is essential now more than ever. If a parent saw low test scores from their child, what was their reaction?

#3 - Never confuse test scores with intelligence or knowledge. Just because scores are lower does not mean the students are less educated.

Some one close to the situation could drop us a line.

Agreed. Parents need to be involved and school cannot do it alone.
My point is, what changed in 2009. Did all parents of 4th grader last year suddenly decided that they want to
put little time compared to the parents of 4th grader of the past three years?
Second, I recently posted a note about teachers taking initiative to send a weekly report to parents to keep
track of kid's progress. ... my thanks to teachers of Ryan Middle school. Trahan could do the same.

#3 - Never confuse test scores with intelligence or knowledge. Just because scores are lower does not mean the students are less educated.

jmickme,

Please help me understand their mentality.
I haven't heard of anyone who got good education and did bad just
because of the education?
What would be a premise for someone thinking 'education stinks'.

Don't think so. Here is a data from North street school.
For last three years we had 17 , 21 and 25 students at the advance level.
This year it fell to 8???

GRADE 04 - MATHEMATICS
PERFORMANCE LEVEL 2006 2007 2008 2009
ADVANCED 17 21 25 8
PROFICIENT 29 31 34 38
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT 43 41 38 48
FAILING 12 8 3 7

And here is a result for the 3rd grade Math.
Note that the number of students failing for the last three years have been 3,3 and 2.
This year, it went to 16???.... Something is a big miss here and I am trying to
find a common thread ( if there is).

GRADE 03 - MATHEMATICS
PERFORMANCE LEVEL 2006 2007 2008 2009
ABOVE PROFICIENT 5 25 24 4
PROFICIENT 58 45 50 42
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT 33 28 24 38
FAILING 3 3 2 16

These are serious numbers which demands some explanation.

I thought they just brought in a new math program for that age group a couple of years back. If my memory is accurate then it doesn't appear to be too successful.
